We must find a cure for cancer. In humans and dogs.
Miso was diagnosed with clear cell carcinoma in January of 2023 after the discovery of a tumor on her kidney. Carcinoma in dogs is common, but renal clear cell carcinoma is extremely rare. Little to no case studies are in existence. Outreach to various veterinary hospitals throughout the country and world produced no new data or unpublished research that could help drive a treatment strategy. While surgery to remove the kidney was successful, this type of cancer is extremely aggressive and spread quickly. Existing forms of treatments and chemotherapy proved ineffective. Miso passed away peacefully in July 2023.
Almost half of dogs over the age of 10 develop some form of cancer.
A recent feature on 60 Minutes highlighted the incredible physiological similarities between humans and canines. Some cancer treatments that work in canines are also effective in humans, and vice versa.
Historically, canine cancer research has lagged behind human cancer research. But that is beginning to change. The Biden White House’s “Cancer Moonshot” initiative includes funding for canine cancer clinical trials, a further indication the momentum is shifting.
The Miso Harris Fund for Canine Cancer Research has been established through the University of Pennsylvania’s Ryan Veterinary Hospital, one of the most prestigious and respected in the country. These funds will be utilized with a priority towards new studies, research and treatments for canine cancer that do not currently exist.
All donations are fully tax deductible through a 501(c)3. No matter the amount, we appreciate any support you can provide. This fund will honor the love and happiness Miso gave us for almost 13 years, while doing a small part to help the growing broader effort to find a cure for canine cancer.
Thank you to Stephanie Stahl and CBS3-TV for their recent feature on our effort and the broader value of more canine cancer research.
Thank you to Punya Bhasin and the Philadelphia Inquirer for their story on 7/19/23.
